La Conner Swinomish Library

  • Community projects often have complicated funding streams including state funding, grants, public/private partnerships, and private donors. In Washington, state funding comes with the requirement to achieve LEED Silver certification, and projects located in rural or suburban areas face additional certification challenges due to limited transit infrastructure and lack of proximity to services.

For these mission driven projects, we help focus the sustainable pursuit on measures that can best benefit their tight budgets and future operations.

This small, regional library in La Conner, Washington, is constructed of cross laminated timber (CLT), a renewable, and often local, building material gaining popularity for its low carbon intensity. Our lifecycle assessment model balanced the carbon benefits of CLT with the eutrophication impacts caused by the adhesive binders used. A generous donor funded a 23 kWh photovoltaic array on the roof to help reduce demand for grid electricity, contributing significantly to the whopping 41% annual energy reduction projected by our energy model.
